Throughout my time living in Mexico I’ve met a lot of artists and artisans who are willing to dive in and take on the challenge of developing their online presence and build their own websites. I regularly end up fielding questions about how to get started, or what platform I recommend they build on, or how to add xyz integration to the one they already have.
No one – not even the ones who’ve reached the finish line and launched a personal site using something like Squarespace or Wix – has ever said it was easy or fun. By their nature, these tools are somewhere on the spectrum of easy to use but limiting and flexible but difficult to learn. They wouldn’t exist if designing a site and writing the HTML/CSS/JS yourself was easy. So they try to do just enough abstraction so that “anyone” can make a site, but “just enough” is relative and still requires more time and energy than anyone wants to invest.
On the other hand, the potential reach with social media platforms is clearly real, but the downside is pretty well-established too: the black-box algorithm constantly subject to change, the vague content moderation rules, the engagement-based incentives, and the users really belong to the platform, not you. And even if the reach is great, I don’t know how useful it is to have my work sandwiched between someone else’s food pics and ads for shoes.
That leaves a pretty large piece of terrain in the middle. galeria.casa lives in that terrain.
What, specifically, does that mean? A few examples:
The list of features will continue to grow over time, but will intentionally be limited to things designed to serve artists, galleries, or collectors and their art. We also promise to protect your data and allow you to take it with you when you leave. Our pricing will remain simple and reasonable for artists. You will pay for the features you receive without dark patterns or lock-in.
galeria.casa is a simple platform aligned with my simple goal: build useful software and invest the same level of craft and dedication as the artists it’s for.
